Embracing Winter!

Embracing Winter!

I’m still trying to love winter weather…so far this winter has been a breeze. When I was a little girl we used to ice skate, make huge snowmen, dodge snowballs from our snow forts, and play outside for hours. Then we would sit by the fire and sip hot cocoa to warm up. Really great memories.

This year I’m trying to get out in the weather everyday…we’ll see what happens when it gets really cold.

If your skin gets dry in the winter cold, take great care of it with our soap. You’ll feel a difference with the skin loving olive, coconut and hemp seed oil.

I also moisturize my skin after a shower with coconut oil. And…treat your dry spots with our heavenly sugar scrubs. It will leave your skin lightly scented for your holiday party.

One of my FAVORITE things…Go Treat Yourself!

Sanaa's 8th Street Gourmet

Downtown Sioux Falls at 8th and Railroad

This past Saturday I was lucky enough to go on a lunch date with my husband.  He took me to one of my favorite places…Sanaa’s 8th Street Gourmet Restraunt.

We enjoyed the 10-course buffet with breads, soup, meatballs, salads, hummos, olive tapanade, and several other gourmet dishes with eggplant and chicken.  If you haven’t been, and you are a food lover, this is the place for you.  I’m all about community, clean eating, green principles and doing what you love which is why I love everything about this place…

The Mediterranean menu is healthy, and fresh and delicious.  Everything on the menu is cooked daily from scratch with local seasonal ingredients and fresh ground spices.  There are meat entrees, and lots of choices for vegans, vegetarians and gluten-free choices.  And…of course, desert.

Warm ambiance with bright colors, beautiful artwork, sunshine and good company.

Three kinds of breads.

Fresh Salads. The tabouli is my favorite, I would walk barefoot from Beresford to get it. It’s THAT fresh!

Delicious Entrees, Saffron Rice, Meatballs, Potato Artichoke Stew, Eggplant, a Chicken Dish, Vegetable and Bean Soup

I didn’t snap a pic of the deserts, but they were plentiful and delicious.  I had a peice of the most heavenly baklava.

By the way, I'm wearing the smile you gave me!

Truly grateful for your patronage, your kindness and your willingness to share. 🙂

Growing a small business is seemingly an uphill battle.  But a battle it is and it isn’t.  I’m looking at it as a lesson.  Lots of homework, lots of tests, lots of teachers, lots of expense, and a tremendous amount of fun!

Over the last three years I have learned  a great deal about soap making, natural ingredients, essential oils, aromatherapy, and skin care.  All about the process of soapmaking, choosing and making molds, developing recipes, finding suppliers for ingredients,  packaging and labeling, and all about barcodes, sales tax, accounting, and a thousand other things I didn’t know.

I’ve had to learn to juggle website & social media marketing, scheduling and attending farmer’s markets & pop-upshows, finding props, and learning how to anchor my tent.

It’s been such a difficult and amazingly satisfying journey.  I have met the most interesting, kindhearted people.  I’ve been blessed by others who are willing to share their knowledge with me.  I’m a wee bit tired…and so blessed to be able to have this business which has become my way of life.

Big thank you to sweet family and especially my husband for his support, wisdom and kindness on this journey.

It’s time for the next step…we are looking to grow our business and need your help.  Small-business bootstrapping  is what we do, it is what we’ve always done.  We have found that word of mouth is the very best kind of advertising.  I know that from my own experience, I trust my friends to let me in on the good stuff.  I would invite you to share us with your friends or retailers that may have a spot for our all-natural products.  You have my gratitude.

8 Uses for Coffee Grounds

We love our coffee in the morning and go through a lot of it!  We use the grounds in our Mechanic’s/Gardner’s soap as an exfoliant and deodorizer.   Purchase our Mechanic’s/Gardener’s soap here.

This soap is extra scrubby – with pumice & coffee grounds. The coffee grounds are a great deodorizer, soooo nice by the kitchen sink.

Because we’re big on recycling I thought I’d shout out 8 ways to use coffee grounds!

  1. As I  mentioned, coffee is a great deororizer.   Dry out the grounds on a cookie sheet and then put them in a bowl in your refrigerator or freezer, or rub them on your hands to get rid of  food prep smells.
  2. Plant Food: throw them in your compost bin.   Plants that prefer acidic soils will thrive with coffee grounds in the soil.
  3. Dye:  Steep coffee grounds in hot water to make dye for Easter eggs,  fabric or a pigment for paper.  This pigment will also work well on furniture scratches.
  4. Insect  Repellant: sprinkle coffee grounds on ant piles and the little guys will  move out.  Snails & slugs are also not fans and will pack their bags.
  5. Kitty-Keep-Out:  Sprinkle grounds mixed with orange peels  in your flowerbed and Miss Kitty will not powder her nose there.
  6. Reduces Cellulite: High priced creams almost always contain caffeine. Caffiene enhances fat metabolism, reducing the appearance of these fatty pockets under the skin. To make your own coffee cellulite treatment at home, mix  warm used coffee grounds with coconut oil and rub it onto your skin in circular motions for a few minutes before rinsing.
  7. Reduce Fireplace mess:  Use coffee grounds to settle the dust storm.  When embers are cool, sprinkle with damp coffee grounds, let sit for about 15  minutes then scoop out the whole mess.   The coffee grounds cling to the ashes making cleanup much less messy.
  8. Make a cockroach trap.  Fill a can or jar with an inch or two of moistened coffee grounds, then line the container’s  neck with extra-sticky doubled-sided tape. The scent will draw the roaches  into the trap.
