Introducing…The Third Place

Been so long since I’ve done a blog entry, I barley remembered  how to log in.  But, alas, it’s a new year and time to get back in the groove.

So for the new year we’re planning a few exciting things!  I will be adding a few new products this year, working on a shampoo bar, liquid soap and perhaps a few other surprises.

Making soap is one of my very most favorite things to do, it might be yours too.  I have decided to teach soapmaking at a new folk school in Sioux Falls, call the Third Place.

Why is it called the Third Place?

Here’s why….

We are The Third Place.
Not home—
Not work—
But that third place
Where you’re welcome to come as you are,
To have conversation by the fire’s warmth,
To learn the old-world traditions of crafting wood, steel, or fiber,
And add to them the movements of your own hands.

We are centered between the past and the future,
Between toil and leisure,
Between individual creativity and the strength of community.

We are not afraid to be authentic to the art,
To take the long and inconvenient route,
To learn the methods of those who have gone before.

We are teachers, learners, doers.

We are The Third Place,
And we welcome you.

Cozy warmth from the fireplace sets the easy-going mood at the Third Place
My first class will be January 24, 2012 from 6:30 to 8:30 and will be a basic soapmaking class.  Here is the description from the Third Place’s posting.
Instructor Erin Nelson
Learn how to make soap from our friends at locally-owned all-natural soap company Irish Twins Soap Co. This course will help you understand the benefits of natural soap as you gain knowledge of the process and ingredients. You will leave this class with soap you crafted from start to finish.

  1. This looks like a great class! I work for the Driftless Folk School in Viroqua, WI and am always interested in what is being taught at other folk schools. It’s wonderful to see that the folk school idea is spreading– passing on skills is so important and fun. Good luck with your classes!
